Members of the Court taking part in the Lord Mayor’s Parade

For individuals who are members of the Chartered Governance Institute, either ACG or FCG, an application can be made to join the Company. In addition the Company will also consider applications from senior individuals who are directly involved in governance or who have a strong alignment with the aims of the Company.

Individuals who are interested in becoming members are generally, in the first instance, invited to attend one of our Professional Networking Evenings where you will be able to meet some existing members, some newly admitted Freemen and others interested hearing more about the Company. Details of these meetings can be found on the Events section of the website.

If, after an introduction to the Company, you decide to apply for admission, you will need to complete and submit an application form. Once your application form is received in the office, you would be invited for a short interview (20mins) with the Master’s Advisory Committee (MAC). That Committee makes recommendations to the Court (the Company’s governing body) about which candidates should be granted Membership. The Committee consists of the Master and two Past Masters; nothing is required by way of preparation. That Committee normally meets quarterly.

If the MAC panel considers you to be suitable candidate it will recommend to the Court that you be admitted as a Freeman of the Company. In order to progress to being a Liveryman you would first have to obtain the Freedom of the City of London, which is a fairly simple process for anyone who is a Freeman of a City Livery company. You may then apply to be admitted to the Livery of the Company.

It is expected that members will have the aim of progressing to become a Liveryman of the Company.

There is a joining fee (called a Fine) on becoming either a Freeman or Liveryman of the Company, and an annual subscription (called Quarterage). Details of these are available from the Clerk.

If you need further information or would like to meet to discuss an application please contact the Clerk.
