A Manxman born 1934, James Carine joined the Royal Navy in 1950 and transferred to the Logistics Branch in 1956.

He served on HM Ships Devonshire, Enard Bay, Forth, Superb, Girdle Ness, Scarborough, Ausonia and Glamorgan. Senior shore postings included, as Captain, Executive Assistant to NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic based in Norfolk, Virginia, Commodore in command HMS Drake (RN Barracks Devonport) at the time of the 400th anniversary of Armada. He presided over a celebration dinner at which the principle guests were HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. Also as Rear Admiral, Chief of Staff to Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command with the usual military commitments at the height of IRA activity and was tasked with introducing budgetary regime for UK naval and reserve forces, except Whitehall.

He was Chief Executive of the British Arab Horse Society and Chairman of the International Stud Book Committee for the Arab Horse Breed. He has also served as Chairman  of Wiltshire Ambulance Service, Chairman Royal United Hospital, Bath, Member of the national Copyright Tribunal, Trustee of Combat Stress and United Services Trustee. James was also created Knight of St Gregory the Great by Pope John Paul II.

James had been a Liveryman since 1988 and chaired the Court to introduce new constitution which, inter alia, reduced the powers of Past Masters.

In the past he raised £1800 personal sponsorship for “City Dip”, and took Company members for a weekend in Portsmouth historic dockyard, for supper on board HMS Belfast and to sponsor a race at an amateur race meeting at Brighton.

He married Sally in 1961, spending their “honeymoon” on Portland Bill because his ship’s programme was changed at short notice! They have four children. His hobbies included dinghy racing and horse racing and having written a “life and times” book for the Isle of Man Genealogical Society, he resided in Wiltshire.

On leaving office, James Carine presented the Company with its beautiful silver mace.
