A Visit to RAF Odiham, Hampshire
WCCSA is proud to be formally affiliated to Base Support Wing, RAF Odiham, home of the UK Chinook Force, the UK’s heavy lift helicopter. Military operations throughout the world depend critically on the mighty Chinook, supported from the base. Afghanistan, Mali, SAS operations and international disaster relief missions see the Chinook in action.
Eight lucky Liverymen visited the Station in October 2018, to see operations at first hand and experience a Chinook flight simulator. This was followed by sitting in the real thing and learning about the aircraft and training required to fly and maintain it.
Liverymen were impressed by the professionalism of the force personnel. Planning for future capability, rapid reaction to changing threats, manpower training and deployment were their concerns and speciality. And especially striking was the competent poise of everyone we met. It was a pleasure to listen to people fluently describing their work and careers and responding to questions thoughtfully, whatever their rank. The party left thinking: ‘…today was up there among the best of our military visits’.
